【Freshmen】

Course Title Credits Course Objectives
Introduction of Film Studies (2,0) This course leads students to recognise and understand the fundamental concepts of film studies through two dimensions including visual aesthetics (photography, mise-en-scène, movement and editing) and audio aesthetics (sound effects, music and spoken language). It could build up the foundation of film criticism and film studies for students. Meanwhile, for upgrading the learning interests of students and matching each topic of lectures, this course would complement the most important extra knowledge that the text book does not mention. Lots of film clips would be cited and released in the class as well for interpreting the concepts. These cinemas could include art and popular films from Europe, America, Japan, China, Taiwan and other countries around the world.
Video Production (2,2) Learning the basic video production elements; such as videography, lighting, editing, audio, as well as practicing the production process meaning preproduction, production, and postproduction.  This course also emphasizes to train students’ creative thinking and dynamic ways of seeing.
Film Genre (0,2) This course leads students to recognise and understand the art performances of American Hollywood genre films based on the backgrounds of humanities, arts and aesthetics. It would focus on interpreting aesthetic styles and narrative forms of genre films represented, and the relationships between them and American history and culture. This course would upgrade the professional knowledge of genre films in the US for students through enjoying and appreciating lots of film clips of classical cinemas, and help them to have the abilities of reading and interpreting forms and styles of film texts as well.
Movies' Living English (0,2)

1.Understand current popular conversation’ Slangs in United State.

2.Improve English speaking and learning capability.

3.Realize the script’s dialogue translation difference between original English  and Chinese translated subtitles.

4.Explain the skills and conditions of scriptwriting and producing.

Introduction to Inter-Asia Cinema(s) (0,2) Base on critical concepts aroused by Inter-Asian Cultural Studies, the course aims to tackle the complicated network of historicity, images and cultural politics, by mapping out a possible terrain of filmic, cinematic and discursive (inter-)textuality against the backdrop of hollywoodization of world annschuuang and cultural immigination. By looking into the film cultures in India, South Korea, and Isreal (Jewish), and by taking examples from other (post-)nationalist cinema, the course hopes to lay out the alternative ways in re-positioning our own culturl identity, and self-empowering oursleves for immergent change.

【Sophomore】

Screenwriting for Film and Television (2,0)

1.To understand the movie-script format & meaning.
2.To collect the writing materials on the way of narration methods.
3.To know the obligations & responsibilities on movie-script writers.
4.To practice the completed movie script.

Taiwanese Cinema (2,0) This course leads students to recognise and understand the art performances of Taiwanese cinemas based on the backgrounds of humanities, arts and aesthetics. On the one hand, it interprets the relationships between films and cultural contexts in Taiwan from macro and historical perspectives. On the other hand, it analyses issue treatments, aesthetic styles and narrative forms of the most important films through micro and creative viewpoints. It would upgrade the professional knowledge of Taiwanese cinemas for students through enjoying and appreciating lots of famous film clips, and have the abilities of reading and interpreting forms and styles of Taiwanese film texts as well.
Film Auteur (0,2) Based on the theoretical perspectives of film auteur and auteur criticism, this course leads students to recognise and understand the art performances those who have strong personal styles in their films with the backgrounds of humanities, arts and aesthetics. It concerns the procedures of growing up of these famous directors, and how the life experiences could influence on their film productions. Meanwhile, this course would emphasise aesthetic styles and narrative forms of these works. It could upgrade the professional knowledge of film auteur for students through enjoying and appreciating lots of excellent film clips, and above all, help them to have the abilities of reading and interpreting art performances of famous directors.
Inter-Cultural Communication: A Visual Approach (2,0) The tailor-made "Image-based Cross-cultural Communication" course aims to enrich students' experience in exploring various stages of language use and cultural comprehension. Designed for the Communication majors, and students from other disciplines, the course will further construct well-structured cultural understanding in ways of comprehensive image reading, group projects, and other concrete practices. Topics such as film, language, journalism, literature, cultural studies, will be introduced and serve as easy-on-hand examples in tracing the trajectory of cross-cultural Communication.
Film and Philosophy (0,2)

Let students learn:
1. The mutual relationship between film and philosophy - philosophy of film .
2. The media of film and philosophy - philosophy of art.
3. The positioning of film art in art.
4. How to talk about the relationship between film and philosophy from the metaphysical point of view.
5. How to talk about the relationship between film and philosophy from the epistemological point of view.
6. How to use the principles of art appreciation to comment on film, from critical and interpretative horizon.
7. Abilities to appreciate, criticize and interpret film.
8. Can apply the principle of film and philosophy to daily life.
9. Can apply the principle of film and philosophy to film art.

【Junior】

Course Title Credits Course Objectives
Film and Gender (2,0) Based on the theoretical perspectives of feminism and gender studies, this course leads students to look and read the representation of gender image, the construction of gender subjectivity, and the identification of gender imagination in films. It deeply interprets the issues related to sexuality and gender, and the knowledge backgrounds and important concepts of film and gender. Above all, this course would emphasise the academic trainings of critical thinking. For upgrading the learning interests of students, lots of film clips related to each lecture would be introduced and released in the class. Not only cinemas of diverse languages could be presented, but it compares how gender issues are dealt with in different cultural contexts as well. It is expecting that students might increase their gender conscious and have the abilities to interpret forms and styles of film texts.
Documentary Films (2,0) Through the way on movie’s passion, to realize documentary film development related to the contemporary social meaning, to know and differentiate the value on different kinds of documentary films, also to learn the production methodology

【Senior

Thesis/Graduation Project (2,2) This course is for senior students to propose and produce videos/films with professional qualities and standards.  Students are required to complete the projects and in charge of public screenings at the annual graduate exhibition.
